There has been a sharp rise in the number of repossession claims for rental properties.

The number of claims for possession by landlords went up 12% in England and Wales during the first quarter of this year, according to the latest official court statistics.

In some parts of England and Wales the rise was much steeper, with 34 out of 172 courts reporting a rise of over 20% compared with last year.

In total, there were 42,520 claims for possession under the accelerated claims procedure in the first quarter of 2013. 
The biggest rise in claims was in Wales, and there was a 36% increase in claims in London.
