A burst pipe during winter normally occurs when the water in a pipe freezes. This causes a blockage and the pressure of the water building behind the frozen section will eventually become too much for the pipe to handle, causing a crack and then a leak. The leak can be anything from a constant drip to an impressive jet of water - but once a pipe has burst it will need emergency attention.
