Credit referencing firm Callcredit Information Group has bought a company that stores data about tenants.

Wiltshire-based TenantID, which has been acquired by the Leeds-based firm for an undisclosed sum, operates a tenant database which covers the UK and Irish market, and which is based on information uploaded by member landlords and agents.

The database provides prospective landlords and their agents, and also local authorities, with prospective tenants’ history. For example, the tenant’s online history may reveal that he has not paid rent, or was evicted or behaved anti-socially. The information says who the tenant is, where and when the tenant rented, and if they kept within the terms and conditions of the agreement.

Graham Lund, managing director of Callcredit, said: “The purchase of TenantID clearly shows our strong commitment to investing in the future growth of Callcredit, and how important we see the rental market.”

Over the past decade, Callcredit, which was founded by Skipton Building Society, has expanded to compete with rivals Experian and Equifax.

A Callcredit spokesman said the acquisition of TenantID would enhance the products and services offered by the company.

The joint aim of TenantID and Callcredit is now to get as many tenants’ histories as possible on to the database.
