The top five complaints against agents, landlords

What do tenants think of their landlords Well, contrary to endless debate about revenge evictions and tenants living in fear, it seems 77 per cent of renters rate their current landlords as good or excellent.

Research by Saga Home Insurance shows that there are some complaints, however:

- 32 per cent of tenants say their agent/landlord is hard to get hold of;

- 21 per cent say low quality tradespeople are used to maintain the property;

- 17 per cent say the landlord refuses to fix broken items;

- 14 per cent say the landlord made a promise which was not kept; and

- 12 per cent accuse their landlord of being nosey.

The research also looked in the other direction at what triggered landlords' complaints about tenants. There will be few surprises in this list:

- 37 per cent say their tenant pays rent late;

- 32 per cent had problems with damaged fixtures or fittings;

- 29 per cent suffered damage to the property itself;

- 27 per cent encountered tenants who did not pay the rent at all; and

- 22 per cent suffered tenants who made excuses to try to get out of paying rent.

Landlords over the age of 55 were the least likely age group to have experienced a the typical traits of bad tenants, although over a third of these had experienced damage to contents.
