Not everyone living in social housing is suffering by being out of work.

New statistics from the Communities and Local Government department have revealed that around 5000 people earning £100,000 per year are in social housing.

It wants to change regulations so landlords can charge a fair market rent once tenants earn above £60,000 per year.

Around 21,000 in social housing are thought to earn above this figure currently.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said: "We intend to give landlords the option to charge very high-earning social tenants a fair level of rent. If the tenants want to continue using this precious national resource they will pay a fair price for the privilege."
