Scotland's letting agents have overwhelmingly called for a compulsory code of conduct after claiming that regulation is the biggest challenge facing the industry.

More than 80 per cent of the Council of Letting Agent's members say a mandatory code of conduct would help improve the reputation of the industry, with a quarter saying the negative reputation of agents is one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today.

The CLA says it welcomes measures to letting agents north of the border to pass a fit and proper person' test

Brian Callaghan, co-founder of Letting Solutions in Scotland, says decent agents would not argue against a compulsory code of conduct.

The problem in Scotland though is the excessive focus on letting agents, most of whom play a very significant role in developing the industry. There is no serious recognition in government of the positive role agents play in improving good practice he says.

And hardly any worthwhile activity is taking place in Scotland in dealing with the supply side. How any new rules are implemented is important, and the handling of the admin fees ban by the Scottish Government does not inspire confidence in this respect he says.
