A London-wide lettings agency has taken one step closer to reality, after the publication of a feasibility study.

The London Councils’ report proposes a cross-London agency, working across all 33 boroughs.

Local councils can now discharge their duties to homeless people by offering them a place in the private rented sector. In the past, people have turned down such offers, preferring to wait for a council house. Now, if they reject the offer of a private rented flat, the council no longer has a duty towards housing them.

The new report proposes an extensive marketing campaign targeting landlords. Incentives proposed would include rent guarantees, rent paid direct, and vetting of new tenants.

The report does, however, acknowledge that private landlords often shun tenants in receipt of housing benefit, and that rent levels in London far exceed Local Housing Allowance.

Of course landlords shun benefit tenantsas they are unable in many instances to get insurances.

What bright spark thought up this little gem of an idea?
