The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has announced the first six people to qualify as associate members in the residential property management sector.

Launched in June, the new residential property management qualification represents the first opportunity for those working in residential block management to join the RICS.

The first to qualify are Alison Mooney, Tim Josh, Robert Dean, Rittu Pannu, Sara Izzard and Sarah Hammond. All work in residential agency firms and will now be able to put ‘AssocRICS’ after their names.

David Dalby, RICS residential professional group director, said there has been a strong demand among applicants for the new qualification.

He said: “It is a huge step forward for the sector. It represents an opportunity for those operating in the field of block management to demonstrate their professionalism, in a largely unregulated sector of the industry. It will also provide a first step for those with aspirations of becoming a Chartered Surveyor.”

One of the successful candidates, Robert Dean, of  Braemer Estates, Cheshire, said: “I was motivated to seek the new Associate qualification as it represented a significant milestone towards the ‘gold standard’ of chartered status. I was pleased that Associate recognises an alternative route to RICS membership.

“This fits our organisation well, as we have a number of individuals who are keen to progress their career but not through the traditional routes. I have been using my designation on letters and emails and I am signing my name with pride.”

Other qualifications in block management are offered by the Institute of Residential Property Management, launched by ARMA, and by ARLA.
