A tenant wrote in blood on the wall of the property he was renting, vandalised an internal door and sent his landlord abusive text messages, according to claims made at York Magistrates' Court.

York Press reports that the tenant - Akif Altun, 29 - was angry about his tenancy and allegedly tipped off immigration officers about restaurants owned by his landlord.

The immigration officers then made a series of arrests related to migrant workers at a number of restaurants in York.

Altun's solicitor says his client is currently suing the landlord for the return of a £650 deposit he put down when he rented a house in the city's Tang Hall suburb.

Altun, who now lives in another property elsewhere in York, has pleaded guilty to sending nuisance text messages and criminal damage; he has been fined £400 plus a £20 victim surcharge and £85 in costs. Compensation for the damage is now to be decided by a civil court.
