Almost every private tenant wants to own their own home – but six in ten feel trapped.

A new Rightmove survey says that 96% of current tenants dream of owning their own home. But of the 60% who feel trapped, one third previously owned their own home and have had to go back to the rental sector.

The survey, which asks the same questions of tenant every quarter and has been going since the start of 2011, found the highest proportion yet (60%) of tenants who said they would like to buy but cannot afford to.

Only 15% of all tenants said they were on course to save up for a deposit, with 11% saying they were unable to save, 43% saying they could only save a little, and 30% saying they would need a windfall to reach their goal.

A total of 3,260 responses were received from tenants.
