The number of households living in private rental accommodation in parts of London shot up by over 200% between the two Censuses of 2000 and 2011.

Strutt & Parker said its analysis of official figures backs findings that the private renting is the biggest housing sector in London as social housing provision reduces.

The borough with the biggest increase in private rental households was Barking and Dagenham with a rise of 230%. In Tower Hamlets, the rise was 160%.
