From tomorrow, New Year’s Day, agents using small drones for photography and marketing will face new rules.

The rules apply primarily to drones weighing 100g to 250g. Existing regulations applying to larger drones weighing over 250g will remain in place, restricting agents from flying them within 50 metres of people and 150 metres of residential buildings.

The new rules for smaller drones include mandatory theory tests, required to be passed to secure a Flyer ID. This test is free and must be renewed every five years.

Drone users must also register for an Operator ID with the Civil Aviation Authority; under-12s must be supervised by someone aged 16 or over and those under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when taking the online Flyer ID test.

There are to be various airspace restrictions as well, which may vary according to location.
