Chancellor Rachel Reeves is reported to be thinking about imposing rent controls on Private Rented Sector landlords as part of a range of measures to limit the impact of the Iran War on household finances.
The Guardian says she is considering imposing a ban on rent rises for 12 months because the government is becoming increasingly alarmed by the economic consequences of the conflict.
Reeves has previously resisted calls for rent controls in major reforms like the Renters’ Right Act – the first phase of which is being implemented on Friday.
But the newspaper is reporting that ministers are now so worried about the financial implications of the war that they are considering exceptional measures.
