Propertymark is advising Britons considering buying property overseas to seek professional assistance, especially about regulations in locations they have little detailed knowledge about.
Ian Harris, NAEA Propertymark President, comments: “Demand for overseas property continues to reflect the appeal of warmer climates, lifestyle opportunities and, for some buyers, the prospect of a different pace of life.
“While destinations such as the Algarve, Mallorca and Paphos remain enduring favourites, prospective buyers should ensure their decision is based on careful planning rather than the attraction of a holiday setting alone.
“Understanding local property laws, taxation, residency requirements and ongoing ownership costs is vital before making any commitment.
“Working with knowledgeable, regulated property professionals can help consumers make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes when purchasing overseas.”
Harris’ comments follow new research published today by Rightmove.
It reveals this summer’s most popular destinations for potential British buyers.
The Algarve tops the list as this summer’s most popular destination, retaining the number one spot from last year.
In second place is Paphos in Cyprus, and in third is Mallorca in Spain.
For those with a wider remit, perhaps curious about some of the most extravagant homes for sale abroad, Spain is the overall most searched for country, followed by France and Italy.

Nick Robertson, Rightmove’s director of overseas, says: “Whether it’s a permanent move, a second home abroad or more casual summer browsing during the holidays, we’re seeing that many British home-hunters are still drawn to familiar favourite destinations.
“Sunshine, lifestyle, and the cost of living continue to attract many to consider an overseas move.
“For those thinking seriously about buying abroad, summer can be a really key time to explore what different locations have to offer, from the type of homes available to practical considerations of moving overseas or buying a holiday home.”
