The government says England’s register of Airbnb-style short lets will be fully operational by March of next year.

Scotland and Northern Ireland already operate similar schemes, and Wales is implementing a similar system – known there as a visitor accommodation register – from next month.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has told MPs that the government is accelerating its plans for a scheme of this kind.

Propertymark says it will continue to press for a system that works for communities, responsible operators and property agents, and will keep members updated when new information is released.

Propertymark backs the scheme, claiming that the proliferation of short lets risks reducing the size of the mainstream private rented sector.

It says: “Short lets can support tourism and give owners flexibility, but local authorities need effective tools to respond where high numbers reduce the availability of homes for local people.

“Our research has found that increasing the supply of private and social housing is the main solution to pressures linked to STLs.

“However, our members also support proportionate regulation that creates greater parity with the private rented sector, including effective local controls and appropriate standards.”
