Jeremy - ‘Spot on’. Your comment is a mirror of our own experiences. We have been in regular contact with all of our tenants, guiding those in need to Universal Credit. The only tenants not paying were already in arrears and now taking full advantage of this situation. The way we have all been treated is an absolute scandal.

It seems as though there is a media black-out with regards to this situation - every industry is being mentioned with regards to the financial impact this Covid-19 is causing except for the Landlords and the Private Rental Sector. We have a tenant who owes us over £3,000 (single room let in HMO) whose arrears are not even due to COVID, but, we are stuck with him and our poor other tenants having their food stolen from their cupboards, whilst the culprit takes over the sofa and tv. Yet our hands are tied with regards to getting him out!!! Universal Credit has been a complete joke. If/when you are lucky enough to get through, the information given to you, varies, dependant on who you talk to. Finally managed to get through to his assigned case officer to be told ‘we have just paid him ..... again’, despite us making them aware he was not paying us any rent (though we had applied to be paid directly). The tenant has now just bought himself a new car and of course plenty of cigarettes to enjoy whilst talking on his latest iPhone.
