The topic of housing benefit was lifted back into the limelight last week with the news that a new proposal is being examined by the Government, which would see those under the age of 25 denied the chance to receive housing benefit.

This is always an area that divides opinion amongst agents and landlords; whether or not to accept tenants who claim housing benefits. So decided to put the question to those in the industry.

Through our UK Letting Professionals group on LinkedIn, we asked our group members: Are you in favour of new proposals that would prevent those under the age of 25 from claiming housing benefit?

Unsurprisingly, opinion was split almost right down the middle! 54% voted yes, they were in favour of the new proposals, while the other 45% said no, claiming that if the proposals were turned into legislation then that could be harmful for business.

One group member, who voted no, said: “Seems a bit 'one size fits all ' to me. Improve the vetting process by all means and weed out the scammers , the work shy and the career claimants but lets not use age as the sole criteria for assessing someone's right to benefits.”

The UK Letting Professionals group is open to all those who are members of the letting industry, with the aim to be the number one source of letting industry news and views on LinkedIn and beyond.

So keep checking back on the group for all the latest news stories, information and opinions. And if you aren’t a member then join now!
