Landlords have seen off an attempt by a local council to set new standards in HMOs.

Southwark Council in London wanted to change bedroom sizes in HMOs from the legal minimum established in the Housing Act 1985, by increasing them from 6.5sqm to 10sqm.

HMO landlord Liz Bunton went to the National Landlords Association and the property ‘club’ she belongs to, Platinum Property Partners.

PPA and the NLA rallied other local landlords to a meeting, and wrote to the council, giving legal and practical reasons why the new standards proposed were unacceptable.

The council has now withdrawn its draft standards
