Landlords avoid council licensing by setting up their own alternative

A group of landlords that mounted a successful legal challenge to a council’s proposed licensing scheme is continuing to recruit letting agents and buy to let investors to their own self-managed alternative system.

As previously reported on Letting Agent Today, the Somerset Property Network came into existence last year in a bid to avoid a council scheme which would have required each landlord to pay £320 per property.

The campaign to create the group was coordinated by TR Online Lettings, a locally-based agency. 

Now the SPN has hosted an accreditation and training day for landlords to join the National Landlords’ Code of Excellence last week. The code allows tenants to report anti-social behaviour and problems within properties. 

Landlords feel it will help them to work effectively alongside North Somerset council, and will deter the authority from introducing selective licensing, according to a progress report on the organisation published in the Weston Mercury.

No figures have been given on membership but the report suggests more landlords have joined up.

    So think this through. They all join their own little closed shop and next year just after the annual subs have been paid the council re-introduce a licence scheme so they all have to pay again! Or am I missing something?
