Divorce, bereavement, moving home…these things are often listed as some of life’s most distressing events. It doesn’t make for great reading, does it?

But moving home needn’t be something to dread, with the right level of preparation, it can be smooth and hassle-free. It can even be enjoyable.

Below, borrowing from our expertise working as sales and lettings agents across Milton Keynes, Bedford and East Northants, we have put together a few little pointers to help you on your way...

Define your moving strategy

Do you go for the DIY approach or call in the professionals? Well, if you don’t have too many belongings and feel you have the ability (and manpower) to move everything yourself, then this option is likely to be much cheaper.

If, however, you would rather hire a removals firm to do the back-breaking lifting, then ensure that the company is part of the British Association of Removers (BAR). That way you know you’re getting a reliable, fully accredited firm rather than a bunch of overpriced cowboys.

In addition, make sure you hire the removals team at least two weeks before moving day, just to be on the safe side.

Pack in advance

No matter how organised and disciplined you are, you can rest assured that packing will take longer than you think. So don’t leave it to the last minute – packing in a rush is never fun, take it from us!

Also, make sure you have a strict system in place. This will help you to arrange everything in a structured way and will reduce the chances of you leaving anything vital behind.

Strong, heavy-duty boxes and bubble wrap are highly recommended for those more delicate and valuable items! Furthermore, labelling boxes appropriately will save you a lot of hassle at the other end.

Make packing fun You might be putting it off for as long as possible, fearing it will be a joyless, endless hardship. But, if you follow the above advice and do everything in a structured, organised way, packing can actually be quite therapeutic.

For one, clearing out the clutter that has been clogging up your house for too long will be a satisfying experience. Depending on its condition, you can either bin it, give it to charity or sell it online.

Keep a checklist

This will be absolutely vital in those manic few days before the move. To prevent you from losing your head and worrying excessively about getting everything done in time, tick things off a checklist, one by one, as you do them.

Make a list of your possessions and the tasks you have to complete and systematically work your way through them. You’ll be amazed at how much this will allow your brain to breathe at such a potentially stressful juncture.

Tell the right people

When you move out, you’ll need to tell a number of people about it. Not just friends and family – that kind of speaks for itself – but the DVLA, the Inland Revenue and your doctor, dentist and opticians.

Plus, the water, gas and electricity companies you use, your phone and internet provider, and any bank, loan and credit card companies you have a relationship with.

This list doesn’t cover every base, so it’s advisable to check who you should be telling about your forthcoming move before you actually move out.
