A six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, has been handed to a former lettings agent from Eastbourne for charges of fraud.
According to a report yesterday by the Eastbourne Herald, Michael Duke, 53 years old and of Arlington Road, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court. Previously, he had pleaded guilty to six offences of fraud by false representation against six separate victims, according to Sussex Police.
The fraud involved claiming that money that had been given to him as deposits in relation to properties they owned in Easbourne were lodged in the Deposit Protection Service, officers said. The properties were managed by Duke as part of his company Dukes Lettings in Meads, an area in the town of Eastbourne, which subsequently shut down.
Police said the court also made compensation orders adding up to £5,675 to the six victims. The prosecution, which was authorised by the CPS, came after an investigation by Eastbourne detectives.
